Nathalia Berkowitz

International Lawyer & Legal Reform Expert.


As an experienced lawyer, law reform and strategic management professional Nathalia has worked in many countries and legal systems working with governments, international organisations and NGOs.


Nathalia has worked in legal and legislative reform in post conflict and transitional countries across four continents. Her legal career began as a UK barrister and government lawyer; subsequently she worked for the Government of Gibraltar as a legislative drafter focusing on European and international law including in respect of equal opportunities, employment, migration law and a wide range of cross-border legal issues from data protection and cross-border financial issues to judicial cooperation in criminal and civil matters. Nathalia has worked in Cambodia, Kosovo, Bosnia, Moldova, Somalia, and Iraq. Her work has included drafting, and assisting governments and legislatures in drafting, a wide range of primary and secondary legislation as part of justice and security sector reform in very different countries, legal advice and mentoring justice sector and government actors on a range of issues including strategic planning. Among other subjects her work has included reform of court and prosecutorial systems, criminal law, ethnic minority issues and maritime security sector reform. Prior to this Nathalia specialised in immigration, refugee and human rights law. As Head of the Legal and Research Unit of the UK’s immigration tribunals she formed part of the tribunal’s senior management team. She taught international law related to migration at the London School of Economics.  Interested in gender and equal opportunities issues, she was co-author of the UK Immigration Appellate Authority’s Gender Guidelines. Her employers have included the EU External Action Service and UN agencies as well as NGOs, governments and academia.


Multi-professional, Nathalia is also committed to the well-being of those living and working in post-conflict settings and is a yoga therapist certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists.


Nathalia is inspired by working with others to achieve practical and pragmatic solutions to real challenges.


Nathalia obtained her B.Sc. Econ (International Government & History) from the London School of Economics and her LLM from London University’s School of African and Oriental Studies.  She has additional qualifications in management from the University of Durham and in mediation from the ADR Group.
