Dr. Miriam Borham-Puyal is a senior lecturer at the Department of English, and specializes in eighteenth and nineteenth-century literature, popular culture as socio-ideological construct, and women’s studies.
She has participated in several research projects, such as the European Project “Hospitality in European Film”, and “Narratives of Resilience: intersectional approaches to literature and other contemporary cultural representations”, both of which combine the study of narratives with a critical approach to the notions of resilience, vulnerability, and otherness, among others, in public and political discourses. She has also studied the systems of censure and control in the digital sphere, with publications such as “Strategies of (In)Visibility and Resilience: Women Writers in a Digital Era” (CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture, 22.4).
Her most recent monograph, Contemporary Rewritings of Liminal Women. Echoes of the Past (Routledge, 2020), combines social history, anthropology, literary and cultural studies to define the notion of liminality and explore the past and present of discrimination against women. This volume won the research award “Enrique García Díez” in 2021, granted by the Spanish Association for Anglo-American Studies (AEDEAN), and one of the European Society for the Study of English (ESSE) research awards in 2022.
