MGIS Welcomes the 2026–2027 Academic Year with Orientation Week and Official Opening
The M.A. in Global and International Studies at the University of Salamanca will welcome its new academic year with a programme of orientation activities from September 14–18, followed by the official opening events on September 21–22, 2026.
The programme has been designed to introduce incoming students to MGIS, the University of Salamanca and life in the city, while also bringing the wider academic community together for the formal opening of the 2026–2027 academic year.
Orientation Week: September 14–18
Orientation Week begins on Monday, September 14, with a session led by Prof. Fernando López-Alves, Program Director, at the Faculty of Law.
Life in Salamanca and the USAL
On September 15, Martín Orloff will lead the session “Life in Salamanca and the USAL,” providing students with an introduction to their new academic and social environment.
Online Orientation Session
The following day, on September 16, Prof. Javier Sierra, the Program’s Institutional Relations Representative, will conduct an online orientation session.
Visa Process and Registration in Spain
The programme continues on September 17 with Andrea Paola Escalera and the session “Visa Process and Registration in Spain.”
Sightseeing Tour of Salamanca
Orientation Week concludes on September 18 with a sightseeing tour of Salamanca led by Carmen Ingelmo, beginning at Casa de las Conchas.
Official Opening of the Academic Year
The official opening begins on Monday, September 21, with a conference by political scientist and international relations scholar Dr. Mikhail A. Molchanov:
“Geopolitics Resurrected: Rivalry and Reach”
The conference will take place at 5:00 pm in the Salón de Grados, Faculty of Law, followed by a welcome reception at 6:15 pm in the Faculty of Law’s Garden.
Dr. Molchanov is a Canadian political scientist and international relations scholar currently working as a Senior Policy Advisor with the Government of British Columbia. His career has spanned academia and public policy, including professorial positions at Canadian universities and work as a senior policy analyst for the Government of Canada.
His research focuses on the international relations of Eurasia and the international political economy of regional integration. He has held visiting appointments at institutions including Waseda University, United Nations University, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the University of Salamanca.
Film Screening and Discussion with Daizy Gedeon
The opening programme continues on Tuesday, September 22, with a screening of “Lebanon the Darkest Hour” and a discussion with its director, Daizy Gedeon.
The symposium will be moderated by Prof. Sergio Jalil and will take place at 6:00 pm in the Salón de Grados, Faculty of Law.
The film examines Lebanon through the aftermath of the Beirut Port explosion of August 4, 2020, while exploring the deeper historical, political and social forces that have shaped the country. It also addresses the 2019 revolution and the role of the Lebanese diaspora in the broader movement for political and social change.
Daizy Gedeon is a multi-award-winning filmmaker, journalist and entrepreneur, and the founder and CEO of GDR Media Group and Dream Creations International.
A New Academic Year in Salamanca
Together, Orientation Week and the Official Opening mark the beginning of the 2026–2027 MGIS academic year, combining practical preparation for incoming students with academic exchange, international perspectives and opportunities to engage with the MGIS community.
